Who is doing the CowboyTrail and how far?

Postby Recumbent Ron » Sat Jan 26, 2019 11:26 pm

Who is planning to do the Cowboy Trail and how far? I ride a recumbent trike with Schwalbe Marathon Plus (Flatless) tires, so I am considering doing as much trail as possible if BRAN is providing rider support on the trails. Anyone else interested in the trail? If you do a Youtube search for it, you will see some absolutely beautiful vistas, a remarkable change from the roads we typically ride on.

One of the BRAN committee is going to ride much of the trail and will give a full report as soon as possible. The BRAN book will have all information to include the condition and what support will be available. Several riders have expressed interest in riding the long high bridge .

So will the highway or trail be an option, and for what sections? Or is the plan that everyone does one or the other? I've only observed the trail between Battle Creek and Norfolk, and that's fairly close to the highway. And the bridge videos look pretty awesome... the railing is higher than the Niobrara, NE bridge over the Missouri, which kept my attention :D.

BRAN as always will be on paved roads. Since some of the route is next to the Cowboy Trail some riders might wish to ride on it. They can ride on it as they wish. My knowledge of the trail is very limited. I have been told that much of it is not ridable even on a mountain bike. There are however some riders that will use it anyway. As time goes on the Cowboy trail will be rated as to where and when we will be able to support the riders. I will publish this information as it becomes available. This subject will be printed in the rider guide. Several riders have expressed a desire to ride that high bridge. I will not be one although several years ago would be all in. As usual the entire route will be reviewed with the Nebraska roads department before making it final. Keep watching the Forum for updates.

Is there any update of the condition of the Cowboy trail? I'm also curious to know how many are planning on riding the trail if it's in any condition to ride. My plan is to ride as much of it as possible, but it's been difficult to find current information. I realize that with the floods, etc., the current state of the Cowboy trail is probably not a top priority for many. At this point, I guess my strategy will be to bring my gravel-ish bike and two sets of tires, one set that can ride the trail and be pressed into service for the road, and one lighter and skinnier set for the road if it turns out that the Cowboy trail is entirely unridable.

We will be having a committee meeting this Wednesday and will get all the available information and pass it on. At this time there has been little interest floating around.

Here's the very latest (posted May 6) report from Nebraska Game and Parks:

"Due to flood damage, sections of the cowboy trail are closed. Currently Valentine to Long Pine and Norfolk to Battle Creek are passable and open. Please stay off bridges and trail segments that are closed. Check back periodically for updates."

Not the best news, but we are about a month out and maybe more will be open by early June.

I was only planning on getting on the trail on the East end of Valentine...crossing on the long bridge and getting back on the highway right after that, looking at the satellite view on google maps this should be easy to do. 25 days...and counting! :-)

That will be the minimum I do, the bridge ride should be pretty spectacular and it is easy access from on and off the highway.

Here is a link to the state site that shows the status of the trail, including what parts are currently closed: https://maps.outdoornebraska.gov/Trails/
